There are numerous moments in Cave Story that will delight you, actually, from returning lost puppies to their owner to a recurring boss named Balrog that likes to make Kool-Aid Man-style entrances.Ĭurly Story mode lets you play through the game as fan-favorite character Curly Brace.Ĭave Story's old school soundtrack is wonderful, although chiptune purists may notice that it's not all authentic NES music. Around halfway through the game you get a jetpack, which is one of the most fun items you'll ever play with.
Cave story 2 upgrade#
Cave Story uses an upgrade system much like Blaster Master, meaning enemies drop experience points that will increase the level of your equipped weapon - but that level will also go down as you take damage. Some are given to you as part of the story, but you'll have to search for the more powerful weapons. You'll find some very cool weapons and gadgets in the caves. There are three endings to see (bad, normal, and good) and the game is cleverly designed to allow you to view them all. It's pretty obnoxious when you make it to the fourth boss, die, and have to go back and do it all over again. Most of the time you're able to save and heal with regular frequency, but the climax sends four boss fights in a row at you with no chance to rest - and that's not even quite the end of the game.
You'll experience a few cheap deaths, but the game avoids being frustrating until the very end. You explore underground caves, do a lot of tricky platforming, upgrade your weapons, and search for secrets. So, the big questions are what steps Amaya may have taken regarding those sorts of licenses (which Nicalis claims were not at all taken), and why Nicalis is suddenly pushing this issue now.Cave Story plays like a hybrid of Metroid and Blaster Master. The closest thing might have been an MIT or FreeBSD style open source license. There have been “copyleft” licenses like Creative Commons licenses developed in more recent years, but in 2004, they didn’t exist. The fact they’re not charging for it doesn’t invalidate those copyrights.
Legally speaking, though, the developer still owns the rights to the source code, characters, storyline, etc. Ideally, it’s somebody giving away the game, which lets the developer get their name out and gives gamers something cool to play.
“Freeware” is something of a nebulous term, legally speaking.
Cave story 2 update#

Cave story 2 code#
The reason for the takedown is given as the source code for Cave Story being infringed (though the link provided points to Nicalis’ Cave Story+), and lists 35 other projects that also fall under the infringement. The Cave Story Engine 2 repository page on GitHub now shows only a DMCA takedown from Nicalis. Nicalis then developed updated versions of the game, Cave Story+ and Cave Story 3D, which were released on the Switch and on Steam.
These projects often ended up GitHub.ĭeveloper Amaya later made a deal with Nicalis to develop ports of Cave Story for the Wii and Nintendo DS. This version of the game was later decompiled and used to create a number of fan made projects, including Cave Story Engine 2, which gave would-be indie devs a means to build their own projects. The game was released as freeware (not specifically open source, per se). In 2004, indie developer Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya released a Metroidvania-style game called Cave Story.
